Telecare - the ethical debate

Telecare - the ethical debate
Telecare offers potential benefits for individual users, including safety and independence. However telecare also has the potential to threaten individual users' privacy, autonomy and control.
Social care and health professionals need to consider a range of ethical issues when supporting an individual in deciding whether to use telecare. These issues need to be considered not only before but also during and after the installation of a telecare service.

The shocking truth about your health | Lissa Rankin | TEDxFiDiWomen

Lissa Rankin, MD is an OB/GYN physician, author, keynote speaker, consultant to health care visionaries, professional artist, and founder of the women's health and wellness community OwningPink.com. Discouraged by the broken, patriarchal health care system, she left her medical practice in 2007 only to realize that you can quit your job, but you can't quit your calling. This epiphany launched her on a journey of discovery that led her to become a leader in the field of mind/body medicine, which she blogs about at OwningPink.com and is writing about in her third book Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof You Can Heal Yourself (Hay House, 2013).
She teaches both patients and health care professionals how to make the body ripe for miracles by healing the mind and being healthy in all aspects of life, not just by promoting healthy behaviors like good nutrition, exercise, and adequate sleep, but by encouraging health and authenticity in relationships, work, creative expression, spirituality, sexuality, finances, and living environment. She is leading a revolution to feminize how health care is received and delivered by encouraging collaboration, fostering self-healing, reconnecting health care and spirituality, empowering patients to tap into the mind's power to heal the body, and encouraging women not to settle for being merely well, but to strive for living vital, joyful, authentic lives full of "mojo."

An opportunity to improve wellness, prevention, quality of life: Fred Ferguson at TEDxSBU

Healthcare is chronically ill and the major symptom is escalating costs. Reactive health care cannot address the common chronic health problems that are predictable via lifestyles, habits and common situations challenging individuals and caregivers. The major players of healthcare: consumers, health providers and payors (i.e. insurances and government) do not share values or goals. Poor oral health is the most prevalent chronic health concern and is impacted by threats transparent to overall health and wellness. Beginning at birth, health promotion can be easily facilitated through oral health literacy. A password-protected, consumer-centered, and transparent healthcare interface tracking oral health assessment and dental examination outcomes data can provide consumer autonomy and confidence and healthcare a method for global health guidance and reduction of costs for care management.

Telemedicine necessary for Singapore's aging population

http://www.zdnet.com/article/telemedicine-necessary-for-singapores-aging-population/

Telemedicine and remote patient monitoring technologies are necessary, even in a small country like Singapore, to support an aging population and allow patients with chronic diseases to better manage their health.
By 2030, some 30 percent of Singapore's citizens will be part of the aging population, according to Singapore HealthPartners CIO James Woo, who noted that elderly folks are less mobile and face difficulties making regular trips to the polyclinics to receive health care. Telemedicine or remote patient monitoring systems will enable these patients to have tele-consultation with healthcare specialists, eliminating the need to make a trip to the clinic unless necessary, he said.
In an interview with ZDNet Asia, Woo said Singapore's Ministry of Health is taking a serious look into promoting discipline among patients, as part of efforts to encourage them to monitor and maintain their own health. Doing so means they are less likely to end up in a public healthcare institution where bedcrunch is a big issue in the country, he noted.
"How we do this is by getting these patients to take their own blood pressure, sugar readings and heart rate through remote patient monitoring," he said.
The CIO also pointed to the benefits of an electronic medical record (EMR) system which he said would improve patient safety, and provide healthcare providers access to a patient's complete medical history to help in their diganosis and establish the right treatment.
The system will also ensure the same medical records can flow seamlessly between the various healthcare providers, including primary care, acute care and stepdown care, Woo explained.
While the public healthcare sector would unlikely face any barriers, he noted that the private sector could face challenges adopting the EMR system because clinics would need to move their data to a digital platform, which would cost them time and money.
Singapore's health ministry would need to provide incentives for the private sector to overcome this, he said, adding that eventually, the private sector would recognize that the benefits outweigh the cost of getting on the EMR bandwagon.
About Singapore HealthPartners
Singapore HealthPartners is currently constructing a billion-dollar facility, Connexion at Farrer Park, which is touted to be one of the world's first truly integrated healthcare and hospitality facilities, encompassing a specialist medical center, private hospital and luxury hotel.
